I had the pleasure of reading an advance copy of this book. David Lennon continues to stretch and explore new territory with each of his books. This one is set in a time and place as distinct as the characters who inhabit them Boston during its days of highest racial strife, after the city had been ordered by the court to desegregate. Tommy Doyle isn't a bad cop, just a very conflicted one about his failed marriage, about his drinking, and about his sexuality. The strange death of his friend and fellow cop, James Michael "Sullly" Sullivan, leads Doyle into a labyrinth of the commonplace, the unbelievable and the supernatural. Death follows death, and Doyle stays close behind as he tries to understand what's going on to those around him and to himself. Where do the dreams end and reality begin? Along this path he meets a hustler, and while they dance suspiciously with and around each other, you find yourself hoping Tommy will discover his own truths at the same time he discover the increasingly dark truths in the story.
